Sports massage is firm, targeted massage for people who train or do physical work. Your therapist asks about your sport, your recent training and where you feel tight, then spends the session on those muscles.

Runners, lifters, climbers and cyclists book it, and so do people who spend the workday on their feet or lifting. Choose 60 minutes for one or two areas, or 90 minutes to cover more.

What clients say

“Had a swedish massage done by Delena. Very good and professional service. She asked beforehand about any special conditions and areas of focus. And also asked at various times during the massage if I wanted the pressure to be adjusted. Delena did a great job and I would come back!”
Chris Oh · Downtown Brooklyn · Google review
“I try out various massage spots but this one is a keeper. … Even during the massage my therapist made sure they were getting the spots I requested, offering to focus on those areas longer.”

What happens in a session

  1. A quick check-in

You tell the therapist about your sport or work, recent training, sore spots and any injuries or medical conditions.

  2. A plan for the time

Together you pick the areas to focus on. A runner might want calves, hamstrings and hips; a lifter might want back, chest and shoulders.

  3. Focused hands-on work

Expect firmer pressure than a relaxation massage, mixed with lighter work. Say so at any point if the pressure is too much.

  4. Wrap-up

Ask your therapist which areas felt tightest, so you know where to focus your own stretching and mobility work.

Is it right for you?

It may suit you if

  • You train regularly and want help with tight or tired muscles
  • You have a race, meet or busy training block and want to feel looser
  • Your job keeps you on your feet or lifting all day
  • You like firm pressure aimed at specific areas

Check first if

  • You have a recent injury, swelling or pain you have not had looked at. See a doctor or physical therapist first.
  • You have a blood-clotting condition, take blood thinners or have had recent surgery
  • You are pregnant. Book a prenatal massage instead.
  • You want a gentle, relaxing session. Swedish massage is a better match.

What a sports massage can and can’t do

Most people book because they feel looser and more relaxed afterwards. Research on massage for specific problems such as neck and back pain shows short-term benefits at best, and the studies are small (NCCIH summary).

A massage does not diagnose or treat an injury. If something hurts sharply, keeps getting worse or follows a fall or impact, see a doctor or physical therapist first.

Questions people ask

How much does a sports massage cost?

At Bushwick it is $145 for 60 minutes and $198 for 90 minutes. Downtown Brooklyn is $155 and $208. Both studios also sell a five-session package of 60-minute sports massages: $550 at Bushwick and $560 Downtown. Packages are valid for 12 months from purchase.

Should I book 60 or 90 minutes?

Sixty minutes works well for one or two problem areas, such as legs after a long run. Choose 90 minutes if you want several areas covered or a slower pace.

Will it hurt?

It can feel intense on tight spots, but it should not be painful. Tell your therapist if you want more or less pressure at any time.

Do I need to be an athlete?

No. Plenty of people book a sports massage because their work is physical or they sit for long hours and want focused work.

Can I book the same day?

If a same-day slot is open, it shows in the booking box on this page. If nothing suits, call (516) 988-5160.
